I don't really collect video games, but I do have a few PS2 games still in the package. I rented em, found out they were pretty cool, bought em, and never got around to openning them. I really need to go back and play them though (some are also sequels, so I wanted to beat the first before I played the second and spoiled the first's plot).
As for the systems, I feel the same about the next gen consoles. We still have almost a year left, and they really arn't going any faster ibeing released then previous systems, but I don't see a huge need for imporvement yet. Still though, I am interested in seeing how much better the graphics will be along with the new possibilities the advanced hardware will bring.[/b]

Sony is pretty stupid for making the PSP use discs as opposed to cartridges. The great graphics aren't that appealing. I don't buy a game to look at it. $250 is rediculous. If they had lowered the price and have better release titles, I might get it. As of now, I got my SP a year and a half ago. I'll survive on my gba games for the time.

Current price for the PSP is in the ballpark of $189 in japan with a lot of extras (extra battery, carrying case, etc. ) As for the PSP design, I would much rather have this than the gimmicky Nintendo DS. Plus, I would rather have games like GTA, Mortal Kombat, and some FPS games that you know are not going to be released on the kid friendly DS.

But one of the biggest turn off for me about the PSP is the screen. Well, it's not just the screen, cause it's the whole front of the system that's covered with that 'window' material. I think that's highly stupid. Now, thanks to the device not having any 'lid' (like the GBA SP or DS for example) you can accidentaly scratch you system anywhere on the surface. That's just lame IMO. The only good side I can think of for that odd choice is that it give the handheld a great sleek look. I like it, but I still find it stupid.

You think spending $250 on a new console is bad? Try spending $500 on a new video card for the PC. I used to be into the technology WAY too much, going back to when they introduced SOUND into games. Whoa.
One side effect tho, everything I know about computers, including how to build em, I learned by wanting to play games. There was nothing more motiviating than getting your brand new copy of X-Wing and then subsequently learning DOS 5.0 all over again just to get it to run. Those were the days. Back then "portable" meant being able to get the hulking 486 CPU into the car without breaking your back.
Just a little perspective from an old fart.

Owning a DS, I agree it is somewhat gimmicky. DS will rule j00 all!!! These statistics will prove it... NDS: $150 Games: $30 Carrying case: $15 The look on Sony's face when the PSP goes N-Gage: priceless!

The logic there is not very sound. Look at the Gamecube. It is much cheaper, but it does not come anywhere near the sales of the PS2 or XBox. It is true that the PSP is going to be more expensive, but it is catering to a different market, 19-30 year olds. These people want to play more mature games, not just updates from the SNES or NES. Also, as sony tends to do, they are packing the thing with extra abilities (music movies, etc) DS has pictochat, a feature that every 21 year old male wants (sarcasm). I think that both portables will be successful, but you will also see that the future of the big N's strangle hold on portables is coming to an end.

Where are these 19-30 year olds going that they need a portable video game system though? I'm just speaking for myself here, but I have a Gameboy advance, that I bought when the price came down, and it's good for the few times I have to take a plane ride, or kill time at work (just kidding boss), but how often do you use a portable system? Especially when a better version of the game is availible on your home system?

Yeah, I agree with CBM. I don't see too many "adults" playing hand held systems. The large majority of sales are kids. Most 19-30 year olds don't play them on long car trips since they are the ones driving. I just can't see myself ever using it either to justify paying even half the asking price. 250 dollars is a lot of cash to spend on a hand held unless you ae going to be using it heavily. Hand helds are cool and all, but I have probably used my SP a total of 10 hours in the last year.
I could be wrong though. Maybe it will catch on with all it's other features (that is, if paying the extra for an mp3 player doesn't further alienate the people who already spent 300+ on an iPod). It will be interesting to see. I know the PSP has quite a bit of hype behind it. I know as far as consoles go the GC is lacking becuase it pretty much caters to kids only, where as PS2 and XBox has a large variety of both kid friendly, and more mature games. That of course, is consoles, hand helds may have a much different appeal to different age groups like I already said. [/b]

As a college professor, I see kids bringing iPods, walkmen, and Gameboys to class all the time. Not to mention that they play games on their phones. I think that a trendy product like this will resonate well with high school-college kids. Also, sony is more willing to put more adult games on its systems. I have several students that are so addicted to Madden, GTA, and Splinter cell, that if they can play them on a stylish system that actually provides PS2 like graphics, then they will chose that hand held. Most of the students that I talk to think that the DS is a gimmick and that the PSP is going to be a hit. I tend to agree.

But iPods and walkmen are things they can use all the time. Driving, commuting, walking, really whever and whenever. You can use em in place of stereos and they require little to no attention from the user. The biggest problem I see for the PSP is kids won't wanna fork over 250 for a system that they will get minimal use of. That is, if they are anything like me. I am sure a lot of them have iPods so that is just spending extra cash on a useless function on the hand held. Sure PS2 and the Xbox came with DVD players, but at least there you could put it in a seperate room, or move your exisitng DVD player to another room and put the system in it's place. In no way does someone need two MP3 players.
I play games, and I play them a lot. I am not one of those people that are anit-video games. I have all three major console systems and near 100 games for them combined. Yet, I have absolutely no desire to buy a PSP. The price is way too much for the amount I would use it, which is very little. In class at college, I personally have only seen 1 person ever playing a GBA SP in my two years there. On the commute up, I have only seen 2 others. These are adults, over the age of 14. The vast majority of people I do see playing, are kids though. Now this of course, is probably becuase the Game Boy is aimed at them, but I still don't see a ton of people wanting the system. The PSP is aimed at adults, but kids seem the most interested and have the most use, so the PSP kind of contradicts itself I feel.
Of course, only time will tell, I could be totally wrong. There is quite a bit of hype behind the system. I know I personally have no interest in paying 250 bucks for a system I might use a total of 24 hours out of the whole year. I almost never play my GBA SP, and I am sure it would be the same for the PSP. I will just stick o my console games, rather then waste the money.[/b]
