Legol: get it?
kidding aside. If they are, then how was this possible? Obviously a ball joint system can't really be copyrighted since Minimates and a slew of other figures use ball joints. And you can totally switch parts around on minimates. Any lawyers on this board?

They sure used to be and believe they still are.

I think the way Mega blocks got away with the obvious infringement is in the way they connect. If you look at the bottom of a Lego it has round-ish shapes the hold the stud of the next brick. (interference fit) Mega blocks and other rip offs have Pins.

I'll go pick up a set at KMart I guess... something really small, like one piece... i'll probably feel dirty afterwards.

No reason to feel dirty. Mega-blocks have gotten pretty cool over the last 5 years or so. The ninja turtles sets and marvel heroes sets are a lot of fun and well made IMO.

Yep. I kinda like some of the MegaBlocks products that are available. Their pirates line is pretty cool. So are a couple of their Dragons sets. The Mag Warriors I posted about on here about a year or more ago were *very* cool as well. they have great details and great articulation.
I think they are complimentary to Lego instead of competition. They'll never replace Lego however. That's just my opinion though.

I have to admit Meg Blocks figures ARE better looking. They don't hold up exactly the same but are a hell of a lot nicer looking. And they are compatible with Lego mini figs (at least the heads).

The Mega Blocks Pyrates and Spider-Man figures are without a doubt the best mass-market minifidgure on the market, second only to Minimates (Which aren't mass-market)
LEGO really needs to update their minifigures. Darth Maul hold his lightsaber with two hands, why can't the minifig?

They work together. It was previously mentioned by Machine man, but the MEGOblocks use a different system to connect to each other. That's how they avoid infringing on the LEGO patent. MEGOblocks have some cooler stuff, and way more licensed stuff, but they make a lower quality brick.LEGO really needs to update their minifigures. Darth Maul hold his lightsaber with two hands, why can't the minifig?
The LEGO minifig is a classic. Look how much crap people gave them when they switched over to flesh toned figs. They probably wouldn't risk changing the entire minifig.

Jack Stone went nowhere Anyone remembers the Lego Galidor "action figures"? Now those were horrible!

Yes, Lego and Megabloks are 100% compatable. But I'd advise against it, because Megabloks will just filth up the Lego. Yeah, I'm a Lego purist, no Megabloks fer me. But yeah, they are compatable, so if you want, you can mix them.
And yes, Galidor was horrible. The stuff thye have out now is pretty wicked though, kicks Galidor's ass.
And they wouldn't change the classic beloved minifig. If anything they'd make a new line, or bring back the old Technic dudes, who were more posable.
