PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN TRANSFORMERS YET - WHILE IT'S NOT A HUGE SPOILER, THERE ARE THINGS MENTIONED IN THIS POST THAT MIGHT RUIN YOUR ENJOYMENT OF THE MOVIE - YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
Okay, jumping off from the Transformers movie, anyone who saw this trailer is wondering what the heck it is. Well, I haven't a clue what it is, but there's one idea that a co-worker just presented to me.
First off, go to this site and watch the clip again:
www.dailymotion.com/video/x2i1hw_11808
Now, around one minute and seventeen (1:17) seconds into this trailer, the people in the building rush out. A woman asks "What is it? Is it coming this way?"
It's a little unclear, but it almost sounds as if a guy responds "I saw it, it's a (?LION?), it's HUGE!" I'm not sure if he said Lion, but it's sounds close to it.
Does anyone smell Voltron perhaps?
It's been rumored for a long time that it would have a 2008 release. While JJ Abrams isn't one to go for un-original ideas, he did pick up on Mission Impossible with MI:3. This trailer I think boasts a January 2008 release. 1-18-2008 specifically. I wouldn't hold it past JJ to take this on. He's doing pretty interesting stuff that you may or may not like, but you have to give him credit on some of his recent works, like LOST for instance.
More speculation:
IMDB has this to say:
"This updated telling of the VOLTRON story follows a team of space explorers who travel to the planet Arus and learn how to operate Voltron, the last hope against the evil Drule Empire that has 'subjugated Earth' (forced Earth into submission) and taken control of the universe." It also mentions a 2008 release.
A possible idea with the trailer that I like to call "Now seriously, who knows anyone named Pidge?"
So in the beginning of this trailer, A guy named Rob is having a farewell party. He explains that he's going to Japan. Now, it could be that he ends up being one of the 5 pilots for the robot lions, or he just some guy that happens to have some focus in the movie. Who knows. I like to think the connection is that planet Arus sees Japan being the place to enlist since that's where all the giant robot/monster ideas come from, perhaps getting satellite feeds of anime and kaiju broadcasts, so maybe the people of planet Arus contract out to Japan to find 5 people to bring over to train to fight against the impending evil Drule empire. These 5 might just be a bunch of gamers. LOL Crazy, but hey, why not? If the Transformers found Sam through eBay.....
The thunderous roaring in the video - really, does that need any explanation?
The explosion in the city - maybe it's Red Lion (remember, this is all just wanton speculation)
I'm willing to bet that names would be changed since this is an updated retelling. Much like how Transformers did not have a Spike or Sparkplug Witwicky. Come on, seriously? - Pidge? Hah, I doubt it. I would say the same for Hunk as well. Lance, Sven & Keith are border line.
So with all this, I say, why not? The recent retelling of War of the Worlds was modernized and I thought it was pretty good. Tranformers really could take place during any period nowadays, but it's common that it take place in the present. I had always thought of Voltron to be in the distant future, but if it's being re-told, like every Transformers story after G1, then why not?
Why call it either the "Untitled JJ Abrams Project", or "Cloverfield"? Heck, why is The Dark Knight being called "Rory's First Kiss"? Basically to shrug away attention. Imagine how ravenous people would be if it came out as Voltron. People would go nuts and we'd be hearing about it every day until the movie was released.
So there's my two-cent gamble. I doubt I'm right, but it's fun to speculate all the same.
